Timaru based designer Gus Leen is hugely influenced by the texture, form and movement found in Nature. He draws on these three elements to inform his designs.
Ponga is the Māori term for the native New Zealand tree fern, more commonly known as 'Punga'. Ponga floor light is inspired by the cylindrical trunk of a Ponga tree. Overtime, these trunks tend to hollow out if the tree has sustained partial damage allowing bacteria into the trunk causing a cavity to form.
The Ponga floor light consists of an eighteen piece configuration of sustainably grown bamboo plywood, illuminated by a unique five watt LED array. Ambient light is dispersed between each upright, casting subtle shadows on the surrounding walls and flooring. The Ponga sits elegantly in both a large space or corner of a room.
The external faces of the bamboo brackets are finished in black enamel paint. Gus chose the paint specifically for durability and consistency of finish.
